Gail wins National Education Award

Thursday, 23 July 2009

A BENDIGO teacher who brings the school community together through music has been recognised for her efforts.

Spring Gully Primary School music specialist Gail Godber is a winner in the 2009 National Awards for Excellence in School Music Education.

Ms Godber started with the Department of Education as a music educator in 1981 at Brunswick North Primary School. Her first song was written at the school and sung every Monday morning.

Now, youngsters at Spring Gully gather each Monday to sing the song Ms Godber wrote for their school in 1998.

“I wrote the school song with the aim of unifying the school community and developing a sense of belonging and identity in students,” she said.

Principal Andrew Whatley said Ms Godber’s ability to inspire students was outstanding.

“A special feature of her music program is song writing, culminating in whole school productions,” he said.

“Gail has developed an understanding that students are involved in the writing and performing of original songs, and this is highly valued by the school.’’

Minister for Education Julia Gillard commended Gail on her outstanding contribution in this field, acknowledging the time and energy Gail invested in fostering creativity of Australian students.
