Music

All students at Spring Gully Primary School participate in a weekly 45-minute music lesson. During these lessons, students all engage in a range of activities including singing, listening, playing, creating, and moving to music. The music lessons and assessment align with the Victorian Curriculum.

This curriculum aims to develop:

  • Confidence to be creative, innovative, thoughtful, skillful, and informed musicians
  • Skills to listen, improvise, compose, interpret, perform, and respond with intent and purpose
  • Aesthetic knowledge and respect for music and music practices across global communities, cultures, and musical traditions
  • Understanding of music as an aural art form, its relationship with other art forms, and contributions to cultures and societies.

The music program is designed to engage students in the joy and creativity of music and is based on Orff methodologies and practices. Spring Gully Primary School’s music program provides students with a sound understanding of the elements of music, as well as developing their musicianship and composition skills.

Students learn, practice, and create music on a range of instruments including classroom percussion, marimba, ukulele, xylophone, djembe, and recorder.  Students also experience a range of music technology opportunities to increase their understanding of music fundamentals, as well as their composition skills. As a bonus, research shows that engaging in music education also increases students’ social skills, teamwork, confidence, language skills, wellbeing, neural activity, and memory skills. We also offer Grades 3-6 students to join our school choir.
